Philip Pullman 菲利普·托尔金(1946--- ):Philip Pullman was born on 19th October 1946 in Norwich in the east of England. He was educated in England, Zimbabwe, Australia and Wales before taking a degree in English at Exeter College, Oxford. In 1971, he started teaching, and in 1986 he became a lecturer at a Teaching Training College near Oxford for 6 years.
Pullman had always been interested in stories, firstly on the radio, then through books and comics; he was especially fond of Superman Batman comics. In his teens he liked to make up ghost stories and frighten himself and his friends. His first novel, Count Karlstein, came out in 1982, and he has written 20 books since then.
His most famous store is the His Dark Materials trilogy. The three component books are: Northern Lights (called The Golden Compass in the USA)(1995), The Subtle Knife(1997) and The Amber Spyglass(2000). He won the Carnegie Prize, the Gardian Children’s Book Award and the Whitbread Book of the Year for these. He has also won many other prizes for his writing.
There is also a theatre version of His Dark Materials, written by Nicholas Wright, which was commissioned by and performed at The National Theatre in London. There are two plays, each is over three hours long
From the age of 25,he spent eight years teaching at various middle schools in British. He loved this work very much. His main concern is that an over emphasis(重视) on testing and league tables(成绩单)has led to a lack of time and freedom for a true, imaginative and humane engagement with literature.
